Mun Note: The city of Lamara has featured mostly in tales I’ve done on Discord due primarily to being too lazy to bring the verses featuring her to the blog. Lamara is a purely fictional island that has been designed for use in both POTC and Hornblower arcs. Any and all similarities to historical or present day cities is purely coincidental.

Lamara is an island in the Mediterranean Sea that technically falls under Algerian ownership. The accessible port side lies to the south, occupied by a sprawling walled city by the same name. With two lookout towers to the east and west and sheer impassible cliffs to the north, Lamara has been a well fortified secret for the better part of an age.

Due to a revolutionary takeover in the late 1500′s, she has been operating as a lawless pirate city ever since. Despite this, no action has been taken against her and trade seems to be a rather bustling business. Those who enter encounter a very organized living environment and a very apparent caste and class structure that belies the idea civilization has abandoned the place.

In truth, Lamara acts in the political interests of various parties – these parties represented by the ‘houses’ that run and operate Lamara, from port to interior. Actions that go against the articles of war, actions that have potential to start or even end wars if contributed to any particular monarchy can be purchased in Lamara.

From assassinations to the vanishing of problematic children, Lamara’s power lies as much in the fees charged for its services, the secrets exchanged within the walls of her city and the patronage of unspoken “parties” as it does her fortification and the fact no nation can act against her without drawing attention to themselves and begging the question of what they paid for.

Due to her nature as a “pirate port” on the surface, trade is often exchanged with pirates provided they follow the laws of the city. Ships are welcome into the harbor for refitting, and prizes may be purchased in the city walls – all ships are docked and registered, and crews are fully registered at entry.

During this initial inspection, the crews are debriefed on what their stay in Lamara will entail and the punishments for disobeying those parameters. They are permitted within the market, dockyard, supply houses, visitors quarters, red district, and should they have more official business, they may sign for an appointment with a house representative to explain said business and be hosted accordingly.

It is illegal to attack a resident of Lamara – while crews may do as they please among themselves, should they attack a citizen of Lamara their entire crew will be held accountable. Trade will immediately cease as will all discussion and repairs. Sail will be expected immediately, and neither the ship nor her crew will be welcome in the city ever again – any future attempt to enter will see her fired upon by Lamara’s canons.

Lamara has been known to sink ships for grander crimes, such as murdering or raping one of her permanent residents, and has been known to send ships to recover stolen properties and people. Actions meant to incite fear, make grand displays of violence, or defy the rules set out upon entering are not tolerated even remotely.

While the parties each house represents are known only to those houses, the roles the houses play are known universally throughout the city. While there are other aspects to running the city not listed specifically, the Houses manage every element of Lamara, and if it is not listed chances are it is upheld by multiple Houses or is a matter that is not commonly encountered by those who may enter Lamara.

  1. Gold: Head the financial district and distribute funds throughout the houses. Considered the head of the five primary houses and consequently in command of all thirteen, nothing happens in Lamara without the approval of the House of Gold. Generally speaking pirates will never deal with the House of Gold outside of paying her tax demands.

  2. Silver: Head of Lamara’s judicial system, the House of Silver provides both a governing body and an active police force to the island. The House of Silver is split into four known sects; judges who preside over internal affairs, the police quarter who manage the districts, the militia who manage the walls and towers and the naval officers who manage the harbor protection. It is the largest of the thirteen houses. Pirates will only deal with the House of Silver in the event they breach the terms of their stay in Lamara.

  3. Opal: Head of external affairs, the House of Opal manages the truth of Lamara’s trade in secrets and politics. Meeting with the House of Opal indicates your true purpose is far greater than a safe harbour to unload your wares, and exchanges made in the House of Opal are known only to her occupants.

Those who stay in the House of Opal are treated to opulence and quiet assurances. They are the patrons to the island, and as such spend their time in Lamara like kings. Once their affairs are concluded, they will continue to receive this treatment until they leave the island.

  4. Ruby: Pirates are unlikely to ever encounter representatives of the House of Ruby, due to her role being strictly related to the upkeep of Lamara as a whole. Architecture is their domain – they design construction projects, improve fortifications, erect matters as needed and maintain the structural integrity of presently existing buildings. They are also in charge of upkeeping the roads.

  5. Lapis Lazuli: Head of the red light district, Lapis Lazuli oversees the induction, training and housing of those who make market of themselves. They have a private police force and their housing units are secured by the House of Silver in order to ensure their services are not demanded at any point outside of times of active service.

This House is the only house that Bronze will not assign – representatives from this House may approach any who are in Bronze holdings and offer work – it is entirely to the consent of the individual and their terms are set by Lapis Lazuli as opposed to Bronze. It is quite common for members of Lapis Lazuli to move into one of the top houses ( Gold / Silver / Opal ) due to the nature of their work and terms.

  6. Silk: Head of the market district, most pirate captains will deal with representatives from the House of Silk in order to pawn off prize ships in exchange for wares and even gold. Silk is also in control of all taverns in the city, and as such is perhaps the more favored of the Houses among crews.

  7. Spice: Often considered an offshoot of Silk, the House of Spice manages imports and exports on behalf of Silk. They inspect incoming wares and then package it before delivering to the House of Silk for sales, as well as inspect and package outgoing wares for the House of Aqua. Pirates may interact with House of Spice overseers in the event they are selling wares from within a prize ship, as opposed to selling the ship itself.

  8. Jade: The final House involved in the marketing of matters, the House of Jade is in charge of food. They manage the hunters, as well as the farmers and fishers, and inspect imported foods along with members of Spice. They determine distribution rates and rations for visiting captains, as well as for the city as a whole in the event of droughts, floods and other occurrences of nature.

  9. Pearl: Head of the educational sector, the House of Pearl is for scholars and learned individuals to school others in developing important skills. From mathematics and sciences to reading and learning other languages, the House of Pearl is in charge of ensuring that all permanent citizens of Lamara have access to both as much education as they desire and as much as may be required for certain roles they wish to hold. Another house it is very unlikely for pirates to encounter.

  10. Iron: Head of the weapons and laborers guild, the House of Iron manages both the armories and the forges. They are in charge of all parties involved in building and maintaining weapons, powder, ballistics and other matters in relation to such things. They set the rates for all services – from craftsmanship to repair – and will settle disputes between labour parties as required.

  11. Bronze: Head of the residential sector, the House of Bronze takes care of all matters relating to the housing of visitors and the various states of citizenship. Applications to remain in Lamara are dealt with by representatives of the House of Bronze, who also manage the housing and employment of stowaways and slaves left behind by pirate crews. They are also in charge of the placements for problematic persons Lamara is in charge of securing and keeping hidden from the rest of the world.

The House of Bronze sets the terms for any one person’s right to stay in Lamara. Every individual is placed on a specified probation term in one of the Houses. Based on their performances, they may be considered a good fit or moved to another House until a fit is found for them. After which they have a set term to work in order to prove their value to Lamara – once that term is met and assessed, they will have status as a permanent citizen or be granted access to leave the island entirely, based on their preferences and performances.

The House of Bronze also does annual inspections and census reviews of the island to ensure that those who have settled are maintaining their value, as Lamara has no room for idle hands.

  12. Aqua: Head of the dockyard, this house deals most actively with pirates and even honest merchants, as well as official visitors. The House of Aqua manages initial registration into Lamara, docking fees and supplies.

This House is also in charge of the prison, due to the fact that should there be any person found aboard a ship during inspection, that person and one other crew member will be arrested and held until the ship is set to depart. Their stay in prison is relatively comfortable – they are housed humanely, fed regularly, and even allowed to spend time in heavily guarded outdoor areas while their crew is in town.

Due to Lamara’s nature as an island trading in secrets, deception is something she actively secures against. There is no further punishment to the crew or her captain during their stay, though on their next visit they will not be permitted to dock or repair, and only the captain will be allowed on shore. It is generally not considered advisable to attempt to trick ones way into Lamara.

  13. Timber: Head of ship building, the House of Timber is turned to in the event any repairs are needed, and can be commissioned to keel ships for crews. They also provide services in ‘remodeling’ so that prize ships can be used at sea without being immediately recognized as a stolen ship.

The House of Timber is also in charge of determining whether or not a prize ship is worth purchasing, and will exchange notes with the House of Silk, before the final offer is sent through to the House of Gold for approval.

Their final role lies in upkeeping the docks and ensuring they are always in top shape.

LOUDER FOR THE BOYS IN THE BACK ( PSA )

The above banner is utilized to signify world building. As my blog frequently delves into the supernatural elements inherent in the POTC franchise and further develops that corner by incorporating fantasy-friendly verses, various rules and details on how things work will fall under this banner and tag.

What is more, certain verses call upon fictional towns, cities and enterprises in order to further flavor and develop stories without infringing on history to the point of needing fully altered universes. This banner will be brought forth to highlight details on those places, as well.

If uninterested in these elements, the tag to block is expanding the navigational charts ( world building ) – this particular post will also exist in the general psa tag, as a permanent Mun Note attached to everything that falls beneath this banner.

When we first meet Silver, he is rather promptly stripped ( literally, episode one, pretty boy gets sexed up and I immediately classified him as a ‘fandom favorite’ due to obvious twink status and I still do not regret that assessment ) what is notable about this though is, in all the times we see characters strip down ( which is, I will be frank, too often for my tastes ) we always see their scars. Often with panning into them, because the show was unashamed to show us how dark and grisly these times were.

Except – Silver. He was unmarred – unmarked by the harshness of life, the stark realities of seamanship. Despite being immediately characterized as an opportunistic thief and general shit disturber, he bears no marks of punishment for the reckless lifestyle he appears to embody. Which might have been a kindness on the part of the writers seeing as he eventually loses his freaking leg because of this nonsense, but it does pose some serious questions.

We already know his “backstory” as an orphan boy is bullshit – Flint straight up calls him out on it, on having heard the story before, on knowing it wasn’t Silver’s and deciding he would actually give a shit about finding the truth when he decided Silver was worth knowing. Silver also confirms that it was bullshit, in his own way, and the lack of scarring further confirms it because there’s no way a little punk like Silver didn’t get beat down on the regular, let’s be honest with ourselves here.

What we know is that Silver, prior to being aboard the ship Flint’s crew takes over, was unscarred, literate and educated enough to understand the significance of the page he had and deduce its origins, and everything prior to that is “unimportant” to who he is now, to what he has become. We also know his biggest motivation was one big payout that would solve all of his problems.

While Silver is no more open with me than he is anyone in the series just yet, these are all things spinning in my mind as I craft up his backstory, the story before the John Silver that gets mixed up with Captain Flint and the hunt for the Urca de Lima. They will all hold some significance in the choices I make regarding that story, but for now they stand alone in a short form headcanon as thus:

  • Prior to losing his leg, Silver had no scars on his body.
  • Silver was most definitely not raised in an orphanage.
  • Silver possesses at least a modest education.
  • Silver speaks fluent Spanish.
  • Silver was most definitely not a sailor prior to pirate shenanigans.
  • Despite this, Silver can swim, which is a rare skill for the times.
  • Silver needed money to disappear
  • Silver’s past holds genuine trauma for him
  • Silver’s past is something he wants to be unknown
  • Silver’s past is something he wants to be seen as unimportant

These are all facts of my Silver, though what backstory comes of it will be entirely clear of canon influence seeing as he worked very hard to keep his truth separate from the narrative.

( Side note to myself mostly but why could everyone swim, Starz? That is not historically accurate for shit honeybuns now I gotta come up for reasons why skillsets exist. )

I don’t know what to say. I appreciate that, and I am genuinely sorry. But you can see how this might be of particular and immediate concern to me. Before today I knew of two people who managed to truly know you. To gain your trust, to be your partner, and they both ended up dead while playing the role. Now you’re telling me there’s a third member of this class. Making it even less credible to characterize Mr. Gates and Miss Barlow’s deaths as bad luck. It would seem that those closest to you meet their end not just during the relationship – but because of it. And as I sit here, I am acutely aware that there may be noone closer to you in the world, than I.

There is a lot more to this scene, a lot more ways in which Silver inserts himself into the narrative of Flint’s trauma in ways that seem to go unnoticed to Flint himself, who focuses instead on the idea presented here that somehow he is to blame for the losses of Thomas and Miranda – Gates, of course he cannot argue, but Thomas – that’s a direct and palpable hit that he needs to assuage.

Silver maneuvers Flint expertly in this moment – directing his attention to the idea that he has the power to destroy the man and thus, drawing forth Flint’s hubris. Blinding him with his own pride to the fact he has now been manipulated into valuing Silver more than he actually should because now there is an internal association between this man, and those who were once the dearest to him.

The thing I must stress, above all other things, is the fact that Silver made these insinuations deliberately. Under no circumstances will I abide by the idea that Silver was not holding Flint responsible for his deepest traumas and convincing the man to blame himself while he was at it.

But before I unpack why he would fly for Flint’s throat in such a savage and unrelentingly cruel fashion – and why I will never ignore this conversation and I will never accept the idea that Silver did not mean to cripple Flint with the information he now had – we need to jump ahead a little bit to the next portion, the revelation of Silver’s dark ambition, because it is paramount to understanding this moment in its entirety.

I once thought that to lead men in this world, to be liked was just as good as feared. And that may very well be true. But, to be both liked and feared all at once, is an entirely different state of being. In which I believe at this moment I exist alone. The men need to know they’re in good favor with me. They need it. And there is nothing they won’t do to make sure they have it. Mr. Dobbs will do what I ask of him.

This is where we come full circle with Silver’s development. The thing we must remember is that Silver – from day one – has been in this game for his own self interest and he has never hidden that fact. He has reminded Flint again and again that he is in it for the Urca gold – for a one time fortune that will make all his problems disappear.

Even when he approaches the men, he tells them straight to their faces, he wanted the gold so that he could leave behind every single one of them. He held no loyalty to any save himself – he had the location of the Urca gold, the awareness of how to get it, the tactics in play to obtain it without Flint, and actively prepared to betray every single crew member to get it – while telling them to their faces that he did not give a damn about any of them.

There is no magical shift in his allegiance when he works to free the crew from Vane’s men. The fastest and safest way back to Nassau where the gold he wanted awaited him, was aboard a ship that was not, in fact, conquered by a crew as likely to kill him as let him live.

Silver knew that this crew – that Billy ( who wisely hated him from at start of all this ) was now moved to him. Was convinced by him. Counted him as a brother. He wasn’t going to argue that allegiance while it benefitted him – and he knew they had the means to pull him out of the situation he was in provided he served as a distraction for a long enough period of time.

He was still focused on the fastest, safest, and most convenient road to the gold he was after. Having his leg smashed up hurt, but the promise of his looming escape and the knowledge of the freedoms awaiting him were enough to bear it through. It was never more than the strength of his loyalty to himself – and a complete misunderstanding of how fucked his leg was actually getting.

And this is where things get interesting. Somewhere in the time jump between season two and season Beard & Baldy three, it feels like Silver has had some kind of change of heart. We already know he somehow sold Flint on the fact someone else betrayed the gold situation ( why did Flint buy this horseshit from a guy whose first hello was a robbery of information? Nobody knows ) but now he is – really concerned about the men. Actually seems genuinely interested in their welfare as – of all the fucking things, their new quartermaster. He’s almost boggling in his focus and strange dedication to Flint – and the 180 is made clear right here:

“Fucking hell – what part of ‘let us take care of you’ did you not understand? If it wasn’t for you, we’d all be planted at the bottom of the Charlestown bay. We got a debt for that – it ain’t right not to let us pay it.”
“All the shit we’ve been through the last few months – you want to know what the most terrifying part of all of it’s been? We’ll take care of you.”
“I get it.”
“Do you?”
“Course I do. Look at me. I know what it’s like to be afraid of being the one not strong enough to stick. But it don’t work that way here – and even if it did, it won’t work that way for you.”

Silver is fucking scared. He has always stood on his own and now, he needs to rely on others because he is literally incapable of standing alone. He needs their help, their protection – and he cannot let them see that he needs it. As a man who has always been out for himself, he recognizes reliance on others is the first step to becoming disposable. Which is why he needs them to care about him now because as long as the men think like Muldoon did, he has security and authority when an invalid like himself would normally not be able to appropriate either for himself.

Silver’s desperation to save Muldoon, his genuine devastation at his loss, stems from this. Stems from how deeply that man cared about him. He lost something that was very valuable. He lost someone that was fulfilling a need. And that’s where things start to blur for him when it comes to differentiating what is pure self benefit, and what is caring about other people.
It is a road he’s never had need or cause to travel down before and that is why his motivations are so fucking murky
its because he, HIMSELF, is confused.

For the first time in Silver’s life, he is rendered vulnerable. Physically and emotionally. He is desperately trying to figure out how to preserve and obtain power while also filling in holes he’s never had before ,so yes – it makes sense that people ( the audience or the crew, take a pick think he’s a good guy now. I think even Silver himself wonders if something in him has gone softer.

But this moment with Flint ( yes, here we go, full circle, like I promised! ) This moment when he sees where all his work and effort and now, sacrifice and confusion and terror, stems from something so — admittedly incomprehensible —  this is when Silver remembers who he is
and that
is why he goes directly for Flints fucking throat.

It is why, yet again, he bears his sole motivations, reveals the UGLY, SELF CENTERED TRUTHS of himself that he’s never hidden before but lately has been muddled and confused on and therefore has not shown so damn starkly in awhile
to remind Flint they are not friends
and now, he knows the man’s weakness
and he’ll be damned before he doesnt use it.

But he also
is not lying to Flint
when he says he thinks he found friendship, and respect for the man
because he does

why else was he so confused if he didn’t have those feelings to combat against general self interest?

And he’s hurt. He feels deceived, because he has always been honest with Flint. Always it has been about mutual self interest, always he has been here out of personal motivation
but Flint. Flint has never once told him the truth, and the fact that he was sold in by all the ideologies – he’s pissed
at himself, mostly, but at Flint, too, for managing it.

So he needs to reassert the power dynamic between them – he needs some semblance of complete and utter control, because without it, none of this makes sense or feels worthwhile any longer. Especially because he feels as though he has changed because of Flint ( though that is another headcanon entirely stemming from ‘where else would your voice matter’ aka Flint’s manipulation of Silver that was more of an earworm than anything else that served, essentially, to lead to these murky waters — okay nevermind that’s the gist of the entire thing. )

TL:DR –

  • Silver wanted to punish Flint.
  • Silver wanted to assert himself as the alpha dog.
  • Silver wanted to feel complete control and bare it.
  • Silver wanted to insert himself into Flint’s trauma to ensure Flint would not be able to hurt him when the time came for a break up between them.
  • Silver wanted to hurt Flint and he fucking well did so.
  • Silver did not take these secrets in confidence. He used Flint’s secrets not only against Flint, but to manipulate Madi and to ensure when it was time to get rid of Flint he had back up in having done so.
  • Silver insinuated it was all Flint’s fault on purpose and anyone who says differently is deluding themselves into thinking Silver is soft for Flint.
  • Spoiler: He isn’t.

The Ghost They Whispered Of

@the-empires continued from [x]

Five years in the Caribbean had committed dramatic changes to Horatio Hornblower. He had reached a point in which he did not chase the way back fervently, for the chances were that he would have nothing to return to should he manage to find a means of returning to his proper timeline.

Having followed his mentor’s instructions on what he intended to be his last attempt, Horatio had found himself abruptly transported back to what he recognized almost vaguely as England. His attire was out of place, his questions avoided by men and women who gave him alarmed looks and wide berths. His shirt was nearly a century out of date, his hair was loose and wild at his elbows and his skin was dark next to those who spent life so far from the sun. His pants were belted by a colorful sash, a cutlass, and a series of pouches. A knife hilt could be seen in his boot.

He understood their alarm when he saw his reflection in a shop window – but that understanding did not satisfy his need for answers. Eventually, through a paperboy who seemed to think he was a pirate and was only too excited to talk to him because of that misunderstanding, Horatio gleaned that he had been gone five months ( so short a time in exchange for the understanding he had obtained! ) and was apparently some strange ghost story now. Finally, he learned he was in – of all places – Berwick-upon-Tweed.

There was a significance to it he could not place until he asked who the lord in charge of the region was, knowing his best bet of restoring himself would be approaching matters in the most direct fashion. It was with relief and trepidation both that he made his way directly to the manor house of Lord Edrington – a man he remembered as duty-oriented and far wiser than he in the ability to hold a tongue in check.

Turning to him felt strange, but he could hope, at least, that he would be recognized enough his tale would bear some merit. Although, he supposed his method of greeting was lacking – years with pirates who needed the obvious handed to them on a silver platter did take a bit of a toll. “Yes I – suppose my being here rather proves it. You’d be an odd choice to haunt,” He offered, smiling a moment despite the fact they’d never had a rapport close enough for jesting.

Sobering, he spread his hands in a placating manner, before confessing, “I honestly do not know what to do. I heard where I was, and it made sense to speak to the one person who might know me. I’m afraid I hadn’t thought past that point.” He had – but there was no easy way of getting to it, and if Edrington had no interest in assisting him with the most basic of things, there was certainly no way he could expect more, so why lay every card on the table?

Nothing Left To Lose

@intolerablexsacrifice continued from [x]

Her words had been deliberate – conversation was too difficult for her now, not to choose exactly the right things to say in the hopes of concluding it quickly. All she truly desired was some means of silencing the thoughts in her mind, and though a part of her thought perhaps talking to someone might help exorcise them as surely as writing did, in the end those words would die on her throat and fill her mouth with ash.

So when he asked her where her certainty came from, she did not wish to answer. She feared the truth would die on her tongue, but looking at him – knowing the danger in him was still as real as the violence inside her mind – she found she was not afraid to air the shadows between them.

“Because it wouldn’t gain you anything. There’s no purpose – no vengeance to be found in hurting me. Even if you were to do it – all you could do, would be to assault me physically. I have nothing that you could burn or destroy that has any value to me any longer. Everything that used to matter, you either exposed or ruined. All that’s left is my body, and my life. And they don’t mean enough to you, or England, or anyone, for you to bother breaking.”

㉘ – How do you usually spend your birthdays?

{ Mun Meme }

Interesting you should ask, seeing as this is my birthday week. ( Official +1 on the life bar is on the 27th ) I do pretty much – exactly what I am going to do this time. Not a lot of shit happening this time of year so I tend to just go to a movie with my mom and sister.

Due to work schedules, I will be going to a movie on the 27th before work with mom ( she will pick me up, I will eat at the theater and she will drop me off at work where I will shift into uniform ) and then this Saturday I will be going to see Yet Another Dino Movie Because Jeff Goldblum Is In It For 30 Seconds Or More with my sister, and, should his health allow it, her boyfrond :V
