❝
I am about to meet my maker, and I have confessed.
❞
❝
You are afraid to enter, but you must.
❞
❝ And, I confess… I am very afraid.. ❞
❝
You will fight, like dogs… over this corpse I leave…for this throne. ❞
❝
We have all sullied it, with our greed and… lechery.
❞
❝
We must get you out of here, before they lock the doors.
❞
❝
I have waited a lifetime for this moment; we will go over it again.
❞
❝
I will not forgive failure. From you, or your brother. Am I understood?
❞
❝ Your father found ways to love and care for us in this house. ❞
❝
What other course is there? It’s in the hands of God.
❞
❝
If you were a different man, I might vote for you.
❞
❝
You find me lacking in those qualities?
❞
❝
I shall fight you. To the end, and beyond that, if need be.
❞
❝
But what talk we of fighting? It is all on God’s hands.
❞
❝
I have corrupted my soul. ❞
❝
I beg you, now, to release me of my vows- and let me live as a layman. ❞
❝
You planned this massacre thoroughly.
❞
❝
You could’ve… let things take their course, betrayed me.
❞
❝
Can you dispose of these corpses?
❞
❝
You would keep them secret?
❞
❝
That’s a different kind of nothing. That will cost you something.
❞
❝
Well… perhaps we should threaten them, with just that possibility.
❞
❝
The time will come when all your finery, goods and chattles will profit you nothing!
❞
❝ I would hazard there was a purpose for that meeting. ❞
❝
But, they suffer less than me, do they not? He kills them quickly.
❞
❝
Do you suffer?
❞
❝
If I could write, I would send him a letter.
❞
❝
What if I had you whipped, for wickedness?
❞
❝
I thought I would never know sweetness.
❞
❝
I said, enough pleasantries, did I not?
❞
❝ Those words would never pass my lips. ❞
❝
What you’ve done, is our doing also.
❞
❝
I want to restore the universal Church to her former dignity.
❞
❝
You would entice me to battle- but, do you know what that means?
❞
❝
No war is just. War is chaos.
❞
❝
There is blood, death, armor against armor until one side… surrenders.
❞
❝ You will find yourself in a place… beyond prayer itself. ❞
❝
You bought those three weeks with murder!
❞
❝
You begged me not to place myself in harm’s way.
❞
❝
Yet the crime is written on your face!
❞
❝
And to think, I thought you knew me.
❞
❝
I had no idea you had such capabilities!
❞
❝
You read what my heart wanted, and you gave it to me.
❞
❝
You gave me… joy. Through a crime, I could not have conceived.
❞
❝
And now, I must live my life in penance, praying for forgiveness.
❞
❝
You may find a nunnery cell, but you will never be free of me!
❞
❝
You will need a new language, then.
❞
❝
If he does ill by you, I shall do ill by him.
❞
❝
We may all have to adjust ourselves to new realities.
❞
❝
Had you hoped for gold and silver vestments?
❞
❝
I have… no other to compare him with.
❞
❝
But, in case- just in case- we would make a request of Your Holiness.
❞
❝
You would have me accompany your army as… a hostage?!
❞
❝
It is an august sight, is it not?
❞
❝
We should thank God for all the blessings he has visited upon this- our family.
❞
❝
There is no need for last rights, but your prayers will be welcomed.
❞
❝
Don’t worry- if you’re not dead by now, you will live.
❞
❝
Your tongue will be swollen for days- no talking, I’m afraid.
❞
❝
There we go! that’s nice, isn’t it?
❞
❝ Oh- but how could that concern us? ❞
❝ So… Now, is the time of reckoning, for those who betrayed us.. ❞
❝
Impossible loves- I am very much afraid they can become an addiction.
❞
❝
One you must love before you can love anyone.
❞
❝ There is one your heart must find room for, [Name]. ❞
❝
And, if I may be so bold… I would ask for your advice.
❞
❝
You fear for the constancy of your lover’s affections?
❞
❝
When his eye wanders, as it did from me to you?
❞
❝
You must hate me.
❞
❝
And, if you would take my advice… don’t do as I did; rage, remonstrate, play the wounded wife.
❞
❝
They were fed yesterday, but today they starve.
❞
❝
The poor will always be with us, Your Holiness.
❞
❝
Once, and only once. Just… tell me what to do.
❞
❝ I mean you no harm, kind sir, whoever you may be!
❞
❝
Please talk to me, my love.
❞
❝
You are the light of my life… the light of this family’s life.
❞
❝
I will not have this family at war with itself!
❞
❝
Have you come to confess?
❞
❝
You… will choose a bride, in your ancestral homeland, [Country].
❞
❝
Perhaps battle should wait, then- until his full health returns.
❞
❝
Why? Why should I spare myself?
❞
❝
She has released my heart… of all emotions, but one.
❞
❝
Oh- you’ve come to sample them, perhaps?
❞
❝
You think so little of your charms?
❞
❝
There is a form of surrender which implies no submission.
❞
❝
You are our guest this fine evening- I’d have no discord between us.
❞
❝
You offer him something that money cannot buy. Heaven itself.
❞
❝
And, how can you buy one who would outlaw trade itself?
❞
❝ If I were caught, I would be disemboweled and burned-. ❞
❝
It’s a cruel world!
❞
❝
God speaks through me. I hear his voice.
❞
❝ It is a daughter’s duty to marry her father’s choice! ❞
❝ So, I am to have no voice in the matter?! ❞
❝ I am to lie on my back and wait to be ravaged by a beast of your choosi- ❞
❝ This will come to pass- you shall see. ❞
❝ Like me, you have just declared a war. ❞
❝ An Eternity in Heaven or an Eternity in Hell! What will it be?! ❞
This is a really small notation, but as a general rule ever since the “Constance” incident, Jack has developed a quiet distrust toward cats – particularly cats which seem to be paying a bit too much attention to the goings on around them. He’s fine enough with the ships cats for the most part and lets them about their business, but he doesn’t take particularly well to cats which seem to take keen interest in him, or deign to follow him around much.
This extends itself to other animals – for while he is, as a general rule, fairly fond of animals (singular exception: immortal prison dogs. ) he has learned to be distrustful of any creature that appears a bit above the rest of its ilk in intellect or attention to human affairs. Jack the Monkey is a special mixture of both this now-instinctive distrust toward animals invested in human affairs and a genuine distaste for animals that have been trained into thievery, which naturally puts them both at odds rather consistently.
“Your tone makes the world sound bleaker for the belief you’ve found there, mate,” It was not an uncommon thing, to find sailors who had seen too much and found they’d had quite enough of all the strange the world had to offer. Generally speaking, it came off on folks much older and far more hardened than this lad seemed to be, which gave cause to wonder just what manner of hells he’d been pushed through to be so cynical already. “Am I to take it then, that you’ve lost all sense of adventure?” No point in recruiting a man with no will to enjoy the chase, now was there?
“Once is a long time past, old chum.” There was no denying that once, there had been a time in which Jack had held then-Sir Beckett in respectable esteem. They had their differences, to be sure, but so long as Beckett had respected the lines Jack would not cross they’d gotten on fair well.
When push came to shove however, their world views made it impossible for them to get on – more’s the pity, when one took into account what a fabulous pirate a man like Cutler Beckett could make these days, and with Jack now so rooted in the life, there was no more running from it for him to find even if he wanted to. Beckett had seen sure to that, whether he knew it or not at the time.
“What good is once, when what we’ve got ahead is now, mm?” The real question at hand, was just what to do about a certain, unexpected survivor of a war that never would have started without him in the first place. Seemed damn ironic that Cutler could escape the Locker, when he above all men deserved it most. Things were reaching a head with the crew – and Jack, admittedly, had yet to truly come to decide his own opinion of matters.
It was time, then, to come to terms. “How about we talk a little less about what was then, and a little more on what we should be doing – because if you ask me, this little trial period’s gone on long enough. I think it’s time we came to some conclusions, you and I – what say you?”
Questions like these make me want to bring Weatherby back to the blog honestly, because timeline wise it would make perfect sense for Weatherby and Thomas to have been contemporaries!
They actually would have been born around roughly the same time ( on my blog’s timeline actually Weatherby is only a year older than Thomas ) which is something I hadn’t mathed out earlier though now that it’s in front of me it’s kind of wild to consider that these lives would be so parallel to one another and yet so far apart.
I have Weatherby set as born in 1672, making him 47 when he and Elizabeth move to Port Royal where he has been appointed governor in 1719. Thomas, meanwhile, was born in 1673, making him 42 when he reunited with McGraw after ten years on the plantation in 1715.
Chances are fairly high that Weatherby and Thomas attended school together, with Thomas just behind, and that their circles were relatively close considering Lord Alfred Hamilton was governor of the Bahamas prior to his death in 1708, and it is likely that Weatherby’s family was in close association to the Hamiltons prior to Weatherby’s appointment over Port Royal.
“Well, you’ve seen for yourselfsome of the tomes at my disposal,” Flint answered, one corner of his mouth twitching a little. He was not surprised to know that Vane had heard of how Flint had won against Singleton- he could only imagine how fucking frustrating that must have been at the time, knowing Flint had survived out of sheer luck. “You think I couldn’t?”
“It wasn’t a question of could,” There was no doubt in him that were matters dire enough, just about anything at this man’s disposal could turn itself into a weapon of convenience. “More a matter of would you – after all, this is all about sentiment for you, is it not?”
[1/?] The many Hornblower badasses: Sir Edward Pellew
“The old adversary may wear a new face, but whatever mask he chooses to hide behind, a Frenchman is still a Frenchman and we will beat him as we always have beaten him!”
Once upon a time, Thomas punched Cutler Beckett in the face. It was awesome.
Ridiculous Mean Girls nonsense aside, Sky and I did have some discussion about how it was likely that Cutler worked within Thomas’ circles and some of his *ahem* backdoor dealings as … it … were … ended up mixing with people Thomas felt rather protective of, thus leading to said violence.
I actually never did do the math on it though and fun fact with the math this is actually impossible and I am mad at me. Here is why though. ( Lemme do the math for you I guess, says He Who Hates Math )
The story takes place in 1715, which coincides with the Price of Freedom timeline, when Cutler is stationed in Africa in his very early 20′s. I believe he’s 24 @tidefated correct me if I’m wrong.
Anywhore Thomas was relevant in England 8 – 10 years ago. When Cutler was anywhere from 14 – 16 so like even if they had met I doubt tiny Cutler would have made much of an impression on the then 20-something Lord Hamilton.
“There is still time to run, if that suits you.” The words do not come from a point of malice or mockery – in fact, Theodore sounds understanding of the idea. He knows full well that this is a fight that will not end well, but such odds were not strange to him, either. He was not afraid of what was to come – for it would be a great adventure no matter how it ended, however bitter the fight itself may be.
However, not everyone saw things that way – in fact, Theodore knew full well that the way he looked at the world was queer and maybe even broken, somehow. He saw no reason why Silver should stay, if he felt this fight held a foregone conclusion he had no wish to bear witness to. Bravery was entirely subjective to perspective, after all.
“Oh, I am not sure that is entirely true,” Theodore argued thoughtfully, “I think there is a very large difference between worshipping something, and coveting it. I do not doubt that the godless covet many things – but then, that could be said of the god-fearing just as surely. I think there are very few people in this world who truly worship much of anything, honestly. It’s more about fear and power than it is about faith, in my findings.”
