Stephen, at the very start of everything, saying it sounds like Nelson is the exception to the rule that authority corrupts is a goddamn savage call out to a captain – and like it gets buried by the weevil joke that Aubrey is so damn proud of himself over – but that? Was some damn good foreshadowing. 

Watching Master and Commander again after being immersed in Age of Sail for – gosh, eight months now! – is a real treat because there is so much that I missed or didn’t understand the nuances behind. 

Now I have so much more of a general understanding of the times and the influences, of how ships and command works so the things that didn’t make sense before, that I kind of glossed over, have so much weight this watch through? The significance behind Aubrey’s stubbornness, and the validity of the men’s concerns actually register now. 

I feel like I am going to have a lot to say about Stephen and Thomas after this run through so I am actually quite excited. 

Apparently Peter Pan killed Long John Silver.
