What – happened?” Jack wasn’t usually the one sprawled out on the ground like a dead thing, and he definitely was not the one who tended to get himself fucked beyond all reckoning just so that he could sleep. So whatever it was that had knocked Jack to a point this low – couldn’t be good. For Jack or the Ranger and her crew, as frankly Vane needed his quartermaster to be fucking functional

Crouching, he laid a hand on a narrow, pointy shoulder and half rolled Jack to get a look at him. To see if he was sauced off his ass or injured, or if he really was just having. Some arcane Jack moment understood only by himself. “You good?”

“For fuck sakes Jack,” The sudden jab into his side was even less welcome while his ribs were still recovering from earlier impacts than it would have been under normal circumstances, “It’s not my fault these fucks don’t know when to give up.”

This should have been a normal prize – the fact these men were fighting like mad dogs told him they had something aboard that ship their country would sooner see them hang than accept their surrender of. They were fighting like men who knew they were dead if they didn’t at any rate – which meant of course there was no choice but to sweep through and subdue them.

Whatever they were protecting was worth a fortune to someone, after all.

“This’ll be over soon and you can express your complaints after we’ve secured the ship – understand?”

@theypissedonme

does. Charles. know. that pointy boy loves him with all his disgruntled little pangolin heart.

Chaz is indeed aware of this very important fact, though of course neither one of them put that sort of thing into words. Partly because doing so makes things a little too real and a little too – vulnerable – which is not an emotion either one of them enjoys enduring for any reason. And partly because neither one of them fully knows how the other will react to such a fact being granted a vocal platform.

But he does know and he does grant Jack liberties that no other man  (  or human in general – or pangolin, in fact  ) has access to. Like calling him Chaz for one thing, to the point that it is the only nickname he accepts, though you have to be a Rackham level friend to unlock the right to it and thus far Rackham is the only one on that level and so here we are.

“You don’t have to go, surely.” [ @ vane in That Verse. flint also absolutely fed and watered him when he arrived bc He’s A Domestic Fuck ]

Charles stilled, eying Flint quietly for a time. He couldn’t determine whether or not the man was simply growing accustomed to his chosen exile or if he had reached a new level of loneliness within it, but it seemed strange the one who was so insistent that people not visit had now reached a point where he was not only tending to them, but keeping them.

This was beyond his ability to resolve – too complex and mired for him to even want to try parsing through. Instead, he simply reached out and turned his chair back, sinking into it heavily and remarking, “I suppose not – Rackham’s got his work cut out for him tonight anyway, and I can’t say I’m eager to spend my time listening to him squabble with the traders.”

In truth he didn’t mind overhearing the debates, such as they were – he picked up more than a few haggling tricks just listening to Rackham drag a man under the table with such affable and reassuring tones they thought he was doing them a goddamn favor – but he could tell where he was needed tonight, and it wasn’t with his quartermaster.

Where the trust between Flint and Silver stemmed from, Vane could not begin to fathom. What he did know, was that whatever game Silver was playing he wanted no goddamn part of it. Just listening to him felt like a bad idea, but the only thing more dangerous than a man like Silver who thought he had some measure of control – was a man like that desperately seeking to regain it.

“And if what you propose is correct,” Indulgence, then, for now at least. “What do you expect me to do about it?”

“Immortal.” There were times when Jack said the absolute dumbest shit for a man so fucking intelligent. “He was covered in blood – most of it his own. Never knew an immortal could bleed so much.” Leaning forward, Charles pointed his cheroot at Jack’s nose, his intent clear, “Show me a man who can get in a fight like that – and come out without a scratch – and I’ll believe he’s immortal. Until then,” He slammed the fiery end into the table, crushing the threat as surely as he did the intent to deify any man on this fucking island, “He’s just fucking lucky.” Charles held his gaze steady, daring the other man to argue. “You got that right, Jack?”
