{ Tragic Honesty }

Name someone you’ve hurt. Do you regret what you’ve done?

”Doubtless, I have harmed many people over the course of my career – I am, after all, an officer in arguably the greatest Navy upon the seven seas. As is the nature of such matters, incidents do occur – anything from infractions against the Articles to death upon my sword. Could I name each of these individuals, or even remember their faces? Certainly not – but would I regret my actions? I cannot truly say that I would,” He confessed, looking up, “I do not live my life collecting such things – I do what must be done and I move forward. Now – as to other hurts – such as emotional inflictions,”

Here, Theodore hesitated, before folding his hands before him and stating frankly, “It is never my intention to cause harm but where I have, if I am aware of what I have done, I would like to believe I have found means of making amends by now so as to avoid the formation of a future regret. I do not believe in ignoring my mistakes with others – it is simply my experience that few will acknowledge I have hurt them, unless it is to excuse what they have already meted out of me in recompense. So I suppose – I cannot name any regrets in particular, no.”

Name someone you want to be friends with even though you know it wouldn’t work out.

”Davy Jones.” There wasn’t even a hint of hesitation on that score. “While I highly doubt he would welcome the attempts, heavens know I will make the effort all the same. His seems an incredibly lonely lot, wouldn’t you say? Surely even magical beings such as he are deserving of friendly companionship?”

Have you ever been abandoned? Why do you think you were left behind?

“Ah – never intentionally, I don’t think. And most times I’ve been ‘left behind’ as it were have been my own doing. I do have a rather remarkable habit of attracting adventures, but I cannot say I regret it. In truth I find it very invigorating, and I am quite blessed in my friends, who do always tend to notice me missing eventually and come get me once they do.”

Fire: What is your muse’s temper like? [ for Theodore! ]

{ Fear Themed Headcanons }

“I don’t like to talk about it.” Theodore tended not to get angry – there were men who had known him for an entire decade who if asked the very same question about him, would be hard pressed to provide an answer. Much like undead pirates, the temper of Theodore Groves was a rather fantastical thing that very few would believe existed at all.

In truth, Theodore’s anger tended to show itself in small and subtle fashions – often shockingly passive in nature for a man who could be so bold in all other aspects of his life. This is due to several factors.

The first of course being that Theodore is incredibly difficult to anger to begin with. He has no sense of patriotism whatsoever, and nationalism has also failed to cleave to him – so many of the insults and insinuations that could rile another officer are more often than not, water off the duck’s back. He is not goaded – he attacks only when he is ordered to do so – battle is, after all, a necessary evil to a life of adventure.

Threats to him get very little response, and threats to his family result in the logical and mild reminder that there is no benefit to threatening them. His family is poor and his own inclinations make him an inadequate and unlikely candidate for captaincy – meaning it is very unlikely he will ever hold much value to the admiralty. Attacking the Groves nets nothing but a good deal of effort for no true payoff.

Threats to his friends net you a very fond good luck as they are all rather better at fighting than he is, and he has never once chosen a lover without some capacity for self defense. So attempting to yield a response out of him through interpersonal blackmail is – more often than not – a disappointing venture.

Theodore is not involved with politics. He has no ambitions beyond “adventure” he has nothing that can be wielded against him that will force him to act in any way he is not comfortable with – and as an inherently hedonistic individual that is quite terrifying in and of itself. He tends to respond to criticism with gratitude, and more often than not when he is confronted on his choices he opts to learn and carry forth without any fuss. ( And as someone once wisely noted, this Forward Thinking / “Well I learned! Won’t do that again” attitude of Theodore’s is not healthy, because it actually avoids addressing having been hurt at all.

Which means that Theodore’s anger stems from something else entirely, when it does deign to draw itself forward. Because for as unhealthy as his look forward mentality can be, he does not forget the lessons he learned. And there are times when people cross lines – when people do things he knows are unacceptable – and if he weren’t himself they would never dare.

Theodore knows when he is being taken advantage of, when his kindness is being exploited, and when his ability to mitigate situations have shifted from a skillset to a necessity for survival.

In all of these scenarios, Theodore is likely to be angry in ways he feels impotent to express. How does one express vexation over people taking advantage of a good nature that has no intentions of darkening just so they cannot? How does one say how dare you when it is so out of character to do so?

In truth, Theodore doesn’t know how to express his anger in these moments because he is so rarely truly hurt enough to be angry. But there are ways to tell.

  • When he begins agreeing with everything you say, and ( to quote a comedian ) essentially makes you the King of Right and he is just over here, the Czar of Wrong – you’ve entered dangerous territory. This is not to be mistaken with him conceding a point and agreeing to learn from it – there is a difference between him agreeing that his perspective needed shifting, and him saying you’re right, of course, I have no idea what I was thinking – Yes, of course, I am quite ignorant on the topic – Naturally, you know better than I. This is generally a sign you have, some fucking how, managed to offend him and he can no longer be bothered to grant you sound advice or insights into his thoughts.

  • When he seems very determined to ‘give you space’ – or alternatively, just leaves you alone without explanation frequently, this is a sign that he is feeling taken advantage of, and is his most frequent signal that he does not appreciate it. This is especially notable when he feels as though someone is using him as their anger outlet / their excuse to emote a bad day on someone who will not retaliate for it.

  • When he refuses to touch you. He is a tactile person – he touches the people he likes. When Theodore withdraws that entirely, you have not only made him angry, you may well have hurt him in some manner he cannot express.

  • When the small things Theodore does every day to make your life easier suddenly stop, you’ve fucked up somewhere.

ok…. I’m doing this all at once bc it will appease the tiny fool but…. @ Theo, Thomas, Julia, and Eveline- smash or pass the cuttlefish?

{ Smash or Pass }

On one hand, Theodore is quite aware that at any point in his career – even after Beckett falls to ruin – the man is by far among the most dangerous of opportunities he may find himself facing. Which naturally makes him the most interesting, on the other hand. There’s really no hope for it at all. “Smash.”

“Absolutely and unequivocally a pass.” Cutler Beckett has orbited his way through enough of his peers for Thomas to recognize him for the collector that he is, and there is not a chance on God’s green earth that he would allow himself to fall into that same trap of assured destruction. Now how that might change in the time of Cutler’s tent verse, would all depend on what end Thomas himself faces in that time.

It would certainly be trouble for her in some circumstances – but then again, that has never stopped her before. “Any man who can love my ship as much as I do is one worthy of at least a passing smash.” Depending on how things work out, she might even be inclined to a more lasting one.

“Smash.” She doesn’t need a convoluted reason – the man is pretty and he has as much appreciation for her in trousers as he does for her in a skirt. That alone makes him a win in her books.

{ Unusual Questions

🎐- Does your muse like to collect/hoard anything?

Theodore is not a materialistic person. In fact, he sends the majority of his earnings back to his sisters, keeping only that which he needs to eat and maintain his uniform when ships are docked. His only indulgences come in his hygienic products and in hair ties, so materially speaking, he owns almost nothing – he has his uniform, replacement pieces in the event of damage, standard issue weapons and gear. Everything else he may have need of, he finds ways to borrow or rent. If he hoards anything, it will be the immaterial matters listed in the next point.

🕹- What does your muse do to occupy themselves when bored?

Theodore loves listening to people talk about their lives and experiences. If he collects anything at all, it is stories and adventures – whether the latter be lived by himself or vicariously through another person. He also takes what free time he may have to pen letters to his sisters. Otherwise, his time is occupied either by his duties ( as dictated by the ship ) and responsibilities ( as dictated by himself; namely, being mother to his men

🎖- Does your muse enjoy praise?

It depends – for the most part yes, though there are times when he may be confused by it. Theodore is a fairly humble person – it is not that he thinks lowly of himself in any way, so much as he prefers credit be granted where it is due, and when he finds himself being praised on account of something his men happen to be responsible for he tends to be quick to point out their contributions as well. He doesn’t stand by the idea of a superior gaining all the credit for hard work and a job well done.

  • Theodore is a man who likes his pleasure the way he likes his life – loud, exciting, and full of abandon. He prefers it when he has the freedom to be as energetic as he pleases – and there is nothing he enjoys more than driving his partner to new heights, particularly if he can urge them into being as vocal as he himself can at times become. He considers it a great thrill and reward when he can unlock his partner’s jaw and have them forget the world in favor of surrendering completely to pleasure, frankly.

  • Long, luxurious massage sessions. It doesn’t even have to end in sex ( though let’s face it – they usually do ) He enjoys making his partners melt, yes, but knowing that the lasting effects will help them in their regular tasks later is an additional bonus he really does enjoy. Of course, because he employs the art of the sensual massage as often as he can, the occasional need based massage he delivers is not only exceptional, it also has the habit of sending the mind places it ought not to be going.

  • Sensory deprivation / tactile stimulation are two of his favorite things to play with. Blindfolds and feathers? Leather and silk? Oh yes.

{ Food Headcanons }

  • The one thing Theodore misses most of all when he is out to sea and away from home ( aside from spending time with his sisters and dear Bumble! ) is Adella’s cooking – and in particular, her raisin bread and the way it fills the entire little cottage with the most wonderful and homey aromas.

    Due to how much he adores his sister’s cooking, he does all that he can to contribute by way of using savings to purchase new cookware for her, or special spices. Whenever he is in town he does the grocery shopping, and helps out with basic chores of cooking along with Eudora, such as washing and chopping the vegetables in preparation.

  • Theodore doesn’t like how alcohol tastes in the slightest and considers the scent to be very unfavorable. He does not partake, and when he is coerced to do so he proves to be a susceptible lightweight who is dangerously easy to manipulate – which, of course, is all the more reason to avoid the stuff full stop in his books!

    Catching Theodore drinking is never a good sign – for either he is in a position where the cost of not drinking is greater than the risks of doing so ( generally, this is the fault of admiralty pressures to be ‘sociable’ ) or in the far more likely scenario, he is aware that his position is reliant on his ability to manipulate a man sexually, and this is something he knows himself to be capable of best when he is at least a little tipsy.

    In his life he has only been in a situation where he felt it necessary to drink three times – and to manipulate under one overall circumstance.

    Two of the necessary drinking periods were during his affair with Lord Byron, while the other was during a party hosted by the admiralty where his behaviour served as a direct reflection on his superiors. His refusal to drink was causing haughty remark, and finally he chose for the sake of his friends to partake – by staying close to Gillette, all disasters were averted in the wake of doing so.

    And all other times came during the ‘abuse storm’ we do not talk about. All in all these experiences have hardly endeared alcohol to him by any stretch of the imagination.

{ Relationship Inquiries }

🏷️ Do they give their partners cute nicknames?

Theodore is a very observant person – he will try, but if it is apparent to him that his partner is not fond of the custom he will ( for the most part ) abstain for their benefit. This won’t stop him from thinking of them in those terms, or addressing them as such when occasion calls for it and the name falls naturally from his lips. He is a man who lives his life without regrets – and if he might look back on a moment and wish he had called his lover darling in that moment, he will simply call them darling to avoid such a future from coming to pass.

😘Does their demeanor change when in a relationship?

Hmm. While I would say that he becomes an even bigger ball of sunshine than normal – it would also be remiss to ignore the fact that nothing clouds Theodore better than domestic dispute and neglect.

While like most things, it tends to roll off him and his endless optimism rather well, there can be times when he is vulnerable to misconduct, and will seek to appease his partner either by being sweeter on them, or simply escaping them until their mood is better.

While it is easy to think that he simply doesn’t learn, what with his lamentable habit of getting into bad relationship after horror show after terrible idea, the truth is he has so much hope and belief in people that he tries anyway despite how many times he has been burned – but he has not forgotten the pain, and he has developed means of mitigating it that reflect a history of being abused to anyone who knows the signs to look for.

It is in this, and this alone that he reveals there are in fact clouds that can cast over his shine, but more often than not he succeeds in his ability to make those overcast moments slip by without notice.

♦️ Are they concerned with the social status of their partner?

Theodore literally does not give the tiniest of fucks, frankly. Be they lord or pirate, if they earn his favor – nothing matters beyond that point.

💓💓💓 for Theodore bc he deserves nice things ;v;

{ Learn To Make A Heart Flutter }

  1. Acts of pure selflessness. Theodore is an observant man – and he knows that kindness in this world is something that is seen as unfashionable the higher one gets in society. He notices, therefore, every time someone in a position of power acts in a manner that does not befit their station.

    For example, a lieutenant who purchased his commission and yet, wraps his perfectly pressed uniform coat around the shoulders of a shaking midshipman and goes about his duties is far more likely to melt Theodore’s heart than one who passes that same midshipman with nothing more than an order, or complete indifference.

  2. Softness toward animals. Theodore loves animals and is of the belief that anyone who sneaks their victuals to a ship cat, or goes above and beyond to help a stray dog, is absolutely incapable of being a wholly terrible person. He has been known to stand rather staunchly beside people many would consider monstrous, simply due to the fact their care toward animals has shown him there is more to them – and by looking toward that more, has come to find in them reasons for loyalty.

    ( See, his perfect contentment toward loyalty for Barbossa despite knowing full well the man is a pirate, and an undead one once, at that!

  3. A nice smile. Theodore is – not a picky person, exactly, but he does have a thing about smiles. Certain kinds of smiles can turn him off quickly – generally speaking the more false the smile the less likely it is Theodore will trust you, let alone grow attracted to you.

    The unfortunate drawback to this one is that often times, he is attracted to wilder smiles because he is so pained by the painted ones so common in upper crust society. This often leads him to being attracted to rakish and boisterous men, and more often than not, that doesn’t end well for him.

    Sometimes though, it is the complete opposite. A small almost hidden smile, fleeting and shy, can also tug at his heartstrings real good. Or repressed ones – those hints of pure joy swiftly shuttered – can attract him like a moth to the flame, eager to coax that smile into the light.

♡ : Is there a certain scent that brings about nostalgia?

The scent of rosemary is often enough to bring Theodore back home to his sisters. It is one of the more affordable products, subtle to those that meet the girls in passing but pungent in application. It is used in their baths and as part of their hair care rituals – it got to the point he was so used to it that he didn’t even notice it anymore. It was only when he noticed it sharply on a woman after two years at sea that he realized it’s potency, and capacity to call him home.
