answer the following for so people know how shipping works on your blog.

REPOST. don’t reblog.
TAGGED BY:  I am robbing my old blogs again don’t mind me
TAGGING: @harriedwritings / @hatescorsets / @intolerablexsacrifice / @least-among-hamiltons / @lightsailing / @parlley / @quiauhxochitl / @tidefated / if you see it snag it like a proper pirate and @ me!

WHAT’S YOUR OTP FOR YOUR MUSE?:

  • Jack Sparrow: On the blog I write Jack with @tidefated‘s Armando and ( sort of ) his Cutler as well, so there’s that. I also love Jack with Esmeralda and Arabella, as well as several different OC’s ( some of which are my own design I will admit, though I will stan Jack & Nadifa til I perish ) Another big one is Sparrington, of course!

  • Horatio Hornblower: I ship Horatio with @tidefated‘s everybody on some level, honestly xD I also ship him with @lightsailing‘s Edrington ( platonic / frienemies / romantic even ) and in general I do love him with Edward, William & Andre!

  • Abigail Ashe: She’s pretty attached to @tidefated‘s Joji and doesn’t appear interested in budging on that front any time soon.

  • Thomas Hamilton: @intolerablexsacrifice‘s Flint is the Only James To Exist as far as this gremlin is concerned, and of course he adores @harriedwritings‘ Miranda. I wish it would stop there but he is horrendous so naturally not. He’s honestly likely to pair up with anyone mad enough to dare, if they know his history with Flint.

  • Graham Hume: @tidefated‘s Billy & Edward have managed to snag him, though I honestly could not say who else he would pair off with? He has secret formulas to his tastes I have not yet managed to decipher.

  • John Silver: @tidefated‘s Billy is literally the only person to successfully romance him roleplay wise. I would kill for Madi, though boy howdy they have work to do and with my Silver being – the Jandro mess he is, uh. Uh. Good luck I guess? I literally have no idea who else. Maybe @intolerablexsacrifice but only because Malakh hates fanon Silver/Flint with the same amount of passionate vitriol as I do and it would be delightfully spitefully ironic.

  • Charles Vane: Heck. @tidefated has this boy by the coarse hairs I won’t lie. Abraham, Billy, Cutler, Edward, Joji, Max & William all have his love. Mind you with Max that’s 100% a platonic thing ( see nOTP’s ) He’d probably roll with @intolerablexsacrifice if Thomas willed it. He’d probably roll with @theypissedonme just cause they’re mates and he’s – like that, I guess. @harriedwritings Miranda, absolutely.

  • Andre Cotard: Andre doesn’t get out much but he stans Edward, Horatio, & William.

  • Jane de Bac: Any man who can pick her up and is smart enough fucking not to has a good chance with her honestly, provided he’s not a goddamn idiot and is perfectly able to take orders from her if necessary. If he cannot respect the position she has built for herself, she has no interest. And if he is interested in profiting off her, well – that will not last long. She will not abide by having men scheming to take her power from her, mark me on that. So, provided he is a little revolutionary, doesn’t mind the fact she comes with three sprogs and a very demanding career in both high society and commerce, he is more than welcome to try.

  • Theodore Groves: Literally anyone who can tolerate him for 10+ days lmfao. His biggest ship is with @lightsailing‘s Lord Edrington – he has nothing canonically and honestly I am okay with that. I think if he turned to anyone from his own story ( Aside of course, from my own Gillette, whom he does pair off with on occasion ) it would probably be Norrington. But yknow what he is also a total freak of nature so he might go for Davy too. He’s that wierdo who thinks the way the beard clings to anything that pokes near it is adorable so I mean. Who knows at this point with this duck.

  • Weatherby Swann: His beloved and departed wife Theodosia. Who I really need to write more about. Bad me.

  • Loki Friggajarson: Calypso ( & Davy, honestly. Terrible trio. ) Poseidon. Probably Armando if he got the chance at it. William Bush most likely. Probably Billy & Joji. Flint, Thomas and Miranda would be a fucking romp okay he would love the three of them so much, a bundle of spitfires, he’d be absolutely delighted. Probably Charles Vane. RIP the universe on that front. And idk – try him, he’s very mutable.

  • Derek Morgan: Derek is the epitome of homebody so he really needs someone who can shake his whole world up – man or woman, he’s flexible and he could really use some eye opening experiences. Also, somebody get this damn man some landlegs?!

  • Severus Snape: Honestly Severus is a hard cookie to crumble. I’ve been writing him the longest out of all my muses ( as my first canon muse, I’ve been writing him since 1999 and my only regret is I didn’t leave the fandom and start writing him like this sooner ) but when it comes to romance he is prickly and really needs time to get to know someone first. He doesn’t form attraction based on physical features but rather on intellect and engagement – if you can’t stimulate him mentally, he won’t bother with you sexually, which means going for him means going for the long haul on top of it. That said, he is flexible when it comes to gender so I mean, have at him.

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO RP WHEN IT COMES TO SHIPPING?:
My big thing is that I prefer relationships where the characters learn and grow together. It doesn’t have to be easy – in fact it bores me when it is – but it also doesn’t have to be a fight 24/7 either. I like looking at everything – from the small domestic moments, to the epiphanies that are drawn in the light of arguments or even discussions, to the physical and emotional tensions, all the way to how this relationship impacts other relationships, because I don’t believe these characters exist in a bubble and I love exploring what other characters think and feel about relationships as they form. For me a ship is as much about development as anything else, romantic elements included certainly, but if a character doesn’t learn anything, if the two just stagnate together – that’s no fun. I am all about characters that push and pull one another to do better or fall farther and it’s always a delightful entanglement.

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE?:
Fun fact. If a character is a consenting adult over the age of twenty one – I do not have a point of discomfort. I have been writing in fandom for nineteen years, which means I grew up back when internet safety rules were a thing and fandom spaces were generally understood to be run by adults, for adults – long before the ideas of puritanism and content policing. Which means I have been writing 20-40 year olds with Ancient As Balls immortals for longer than some people on this platform have been breathing.

I have been writing age gaps with the understanding that a consenting adult is allowed to make their own choices, for good or for ill, for long enough to have lost all concept of a fuck to give about what it looks like in the real world, because rather like Thomas Harris, I am capable of writing something questionable without toting it as my personal morality outside of explorational fiction. I am no more interested in dating a 1200 year old ( or 70 year old ) than Harris is interested in consuming human flesh and tricking the police into joining him for dinner.

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING?:
Kinda sorta not really but also yes. Confused? Me too.

So to make this a little more clear. If I have 0 chemistry with you on an ooc level ( we don’t talk to one another outside of memes, there’s no headcanon exchanges, we aren’t yelling at one another at odd hours of the morning about this or that ) chances are you could play the best rendition of my favorite character in the whole fandom – and I won’t ship it because I am far too terrified to get invested.

Alternatively if we’re interacting then I will follow your lead – if you express interest chances are I am already down. I never want to push people in this regard, but I am always clear when I do not want to have this discussion and it usually involves me starting with: I get the appeal but personally, it isn’t something I ship.

I will never lead you on in this regard, but I may be far too shy or fucking nervous out of my mind to outright say ‘Hey, I ship this, would you want to explore it’ because my brain is full of gremlins. Sorry about that.

HOW FAR DO STEAMY MOMENTS HAVE TO GO BEFORE THEY’RE CONSIDERED NSFW?:
If clothes are on I still count it as PG-13 no matter how much heavy petting is going on outside of them so I mean my spectrum is fairly broad. I don’t put anything under a readmore, dick and dyson jokes are common here, and it isn’t entirely improbable that characters may be getting spicy under the sheets ( or on top of desks / wherever happens to be convenient ) but for the most part I don’t really consider it NSFW unless there is some heavier descriptions personally. That said because I am aware this account has people who watch it for some raisin, I will tag anything from a dick joke to a full on dysoning from here to high heaven just to be safe.

WHO ARE OTHER MUSES YOU SHIP YOUR MUSE WITH?:
I pretty much answered this in OTP’s but honestly I will ship my characters with anyone whom they can form something organic and healthy with. If it feels like something we can get invested in I will not hesitate.

ANY NOTPS?:

  • Jack Sparrow: Elizabeth Swann, Will Turner, Carina Smyth, Henry Turner & Christophe
  • Horatio Hornblower: Aside from forced heteronormativity, no.
  • Abigail Ashe: aksjhd Ned Low 150% Also Flint because Big Nopes
  • Thomas Hamilton: There probably should be but he is horrendous so…oh. Abigail.
  • Graham Hume: Dufrense probably, other than that he’s not the pickiest fellow
  • John Silver: Flint. Especially fanon Flint. No. Just no.
  • Charles Vane: Eleanor. Max. Anne. Let them love women jfc. Also Blackbeard, omfg.
  • Andre Cotard: Napoleon probably idfk he doesn’t get out much.
  • Jane de Bac: Aside from arrogant shit for brains, not really.
  • Theodore Groves: Barbossa probably.
  • Weatherby Swann: Anyone who is not Theodosia tbh.
  • Loki Friggajarson: Thor ffs, & anyone he holds familial bond with jfc.
  • Derek Morgan: Rossi & Straus
  • Severus Snape: Anything Death Eater or Marauder shaped. Lily.

DOES ONE HAVE TO ASK TO SHIP WITH YOU?:
I am a very dumb barnacle so if you do not tell me you think our characters could be interesting together I will not know that you think this and shall play platonic cause I don’t want to bother you and its a big circle of suck 9 / 10 times so really if you’re interested just peep at me in DM and we can hash it out.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU LIKE TO SHIP?:
Obligatory age of sail joke here, I am literally always shipping in one way or another. IDK escapist fantasy and fun romps through impossible relationships is my jam, and seeing as I’m not making money doing it, I can’t even say so sue me.

ARE YOU MULTISHIP?:
I literally dock an armada, so big yup.

ARE YOU SHIP OBSESSED OR SHIP MORE-OR-LESS?:
Is this not the same as how often? Uh – idk I wouldn’t say I am obsessed? I do love romantic storylines whether they are angst ridden or fluffy but I can also thrive of platonic friendships and civil rivalries so I mean? IDK what to say here actually lmao.

Mun Note: This is a complete timeline for my blog covering from 1650 – 1815 and including all canons and important character notes. The cliffnotes version for POTC can be found here, and the explanation behind the reassignment of Aubrey-Maturin characters can be located here

It is important to note that this is for my personal reference so that I do not have to jump around on my blog in search of where I placed the mathematics on any one character in order to figure out background setting details.

This timeline is unique to my blog and should not be used as a resource, especially as 90% of it says ‘nope’ to canon disasters and affixes timelines based on various factors outside of the canon itself where things are vague and often mixed up. Canon and original information is also included so please bear that in mind when perusing this.

This timeline is subject to update and modification as needed.

Mun Note: The city of Lamara has featured mostly in tales I’ve done on Discord due primarily to being too lazy to bring the verses featuring her to the blog. Lamara is a purely fictional island that has been designed for use in both POTC and Hornblower arcs. Any and all similarities to historical or present day cities is purely coincidental.

Lamara is an island in the Mediterranean Sea that technically falls under Algerian ownership. The accessible port side lies to the south, occupied by a sprawling walled city by the same name. With two lookout towers to the east and west and sheer impassible cliffs to the north, Lamara has been a well fortified secret for the better part of an age.

Due to a revolutionary takeover in the late 1500′s, she has been operating as a lawless pirate city ever since. Despite this, no action has been taken against her and trade seems to be a rather bustling business. Those who enter encounter a very organized living environment and a very apparent caste and class structure that belies the idea civilization has abandoned the place.

In truth, Lamara acts in the political interests of various parties – these parties represented by the ‘houses’ that run and operate Lamara, from port to interior. Actions that go against the articles of war, actions that have potential to start or even end wars if contributed to any particular monarchy can be purchased in Lamara.

From assassinations to the vanishing of problematic children, Lamara’s power lies as much in the fees charged for its services, the secrets exchanged within the walls of her city and the patronage of unspoken “parties” as it does her fortification and the fact no nation can act against her without drawing attention to themselves and begging the question of what they paid for.

Due to her nature as a “pirate port” on the surface, trade is often exchanged with pirates provided they follow the laws of the city. Ships are welcome into the harbor for refitting, and prizes may be purchased in the city walls – all ships are docked and registered, and crews are fully registered at entry.

During this initial inspection, the crews are debriefed on what their stay in Lamara will entail and the punishments for disobeying those parameters. They are permitted within the market, dockyard, supply houses, visitors quarters, red district, and should they have more official business, they may sign for an appointment with a house representative to explain said business and be hosted accordingly.

It is illegal to attack a resident of Lamara – while crews may do as they please among themselves, should they attack a citizen of Lamara their entire crew will be held accountable. Trade will immediately cease as will all discussion and repairs. Sail will be expected immediately, and neither the ship nor her crew will be welcome in the city ever again – any future attempt to enter will see her fired upon by Lamara’s canons.

Lamara has been known to sink ships for grander crimes, such as murdering or raping one of her permanent residents, and has been known to send ships to recover stolen properties and people. Actions meant to incite fear, make grand displays of violence, or defy the rules set out upon entering are not tolerated even remotely.

While the parties each house represents are known only to those houses, the roles the houses play are known universally throughout the city. While there are other aspects to running the city not listed specifically, the Houses manage every element of Lamara, and if it is not listed chances are it is upheld by multiple Houses or is a matter that is not commonly encountered by those who may enter Lamara.

  1. Gold: Head the financial district and distribute funds throughout the houses. Considered the head of the five primary houses and consequently in command of all thirteen, nothing happens in Lamara without the approval of the House of Gold. Generally speaking pirates will never deal with the House of Gold outside of paying her tax demands.

  2. Silver: Head of Lamara’s judicial system, the House of Silver provides both a governing body and an active police force to the island. The House of Silver is split into four known sects; judges who preside over internal affairs, the police quarter who manage the districts, the militia who manage the walls and towers and the naval officers who manage the harbor protection. It is the largest of the thirteen houses. Pirates will only deal with the House of Silver in the event they breach the terms of their stay in Lamara.

  3. Opal: Head of external affairs, the House of Opal manages the truth of Lamara’s trade in secrets and politics. Meeting with the House of Opal indicates your true purpose is far greater than a safe harbour to unload your wares, and exchanges made in the House of Opal are known only to her occupants.

Those who stay in the House of Opal are treated to opulence and quiet assurances. They are the patrons to the island, and as such spend their time in Lamara like kings. Once their affairs are concluded, they will continue to receive this treatment until they leave the island.

  4. Ruby: Pirates are unlikely to ever encounter representatives of the House of Ruby, due to her role being strictly related to the upkeep of Lamara as a whole. Architecture is their domain – they design construction projects, improve fortifications, erect matters as needed and maintain the structural integrity of presently existing buildings. They are also in charge of upkeeping the roads.

  5. Lapis Lazuli: Head of the red light district, Lapis Lazuli oversees the induction, training and housing of those who make market of themselves. They have a private police force and their housing units are secured by the House of Silver in order to ensure their services are not demanded at any point outside of times of active service.

This House is the only house that Bronze will not assign – representatives from this House may approach any who are in Bronze holdings and offer work – it is entirely to the consent of the individual and their terms are set by Lapis Lazuli as opposed to Bronze. It is quite common for members of Lapis Lazuli to move into one of the top houses ( Gold / Silver / Opal ) due to the nature of their work and terms.

  6. Silk: Head of the market district, most pirate captains will deal with representatives from the House of Silk in order to pawn off prize ships in exchange for wares and even gold. Silk is also in control of all taverns in the city, and as such is perhaps the more favored of the Houses among crews.

  7. Spice: Often considered an offshoot of Silk, the House of Spice manages imports and exports on behalf of Silk. They inspect incoming wares and then package it before delivering to the House of Silk for sales, as well as inspect and package outgoing wares for the House of Aqua. Pirates may interact with House of Spice overseers in the event they are selling wares from within a prize ship, as opposed to selling the ship itself.

  8. Jade: The final House involved in the marketing of matters, the House of Jade is in charge of food. They manage the hunters, as well as the farmers and fishers, and inspect imported foods along with members of Spice. They determine distribution rates and rations for visiting captains, as well as for the city as a whole in the event of droughts, floods and other occurrences of nature.

  9. Pearl: Head of the educational sector, the House of Pearl is for scholars and learned individuals to school others in developing important skills. From mathematics and sciences to reading and learning other languages, the House of Pearl is in charge of ensuring that all permanent citizens of Lamara have access to both as much education as they desire and as much as may be required for certain roles they wish to hold. Another house it is very unlikely for pirates to encounter.

  10. Iron: Head of the weapons and laborers guild, the House of Iron manages both the armories and the forges. They are in charge of all parties involved in building and maintaining weapons, powder, ballistics and other matters in relation to such things. They set the rates for all services – from craftsmanship to repair – and will settle disputes between labour parties as required.

  11. Bronze: Head of the residential sector, the House of Bronze takes care of all matters relating to the housing of visitors and the various states of citizenship. Applications to remain in Lamara are dealt with by representatives of the House of Bronze, who also manage the housing and employment of stowaways and slaves left behind by pirate crews. They are also in charge of the placements for problematic persons Lamara is in charge of securing and keeping hidden from the rest of the world.

The House of Bronze sets the terms for any one person’s right to stay in Lamara. Every individual is placed on a specified probation term in one of the Houses. Based on their performances, they may be considered a good fit or moved to another House until a fit is found for them. After which they have a set term to work in order to prove their value to Lamara – once that term is met and assessed, they will have status as a permanent citizen or be granted access to leave the island entirely, based on their preferences and performances.

The House of Bronze also does annual inspections and census reviews of the island to ensure that those who have settled are maintaining their value, as Lamara has no room for idle hands.

  12. Aqua: Head of the dockyard, this house deals most actively with pirates and even honest merchants, as well as official visitors. The House of Aqua manages initial registration into Lamara, docking fees and supplies.

This House is also in charge of the prison, due to the fact that should there be any person found aboard a ship during inspection, that person and one other crew member will be arrested and held until the ship is set to depart. Their stay in prison is relatively comfortable – they are housed humanely, fed regularly, and even allowed to spend time in heavily guarded outdoor areas while their crew is in town.

Due to Lamara’s nature as an island trading in secrets, deception is something she actively secures against. There is no further punishment to the crew or her captain during their stay, though on their next visit they will not be permitted to dock or repair, and only the captain will be allowed on shore. It is generally not considered advisable to attempt to trick ones way into Lamara.

  13. Timber: Head of ship building, the House of Timber is turned to in the event any repairs are needed, and can be commissioned to keel ships for crews. They also provide services in ‘remodeling’ so that prize ships can be used at sea without being immediately recognized as a stolen ship.

The House of Timber is also in charge of determining whether or not a prize ship is worth purchasing, and will exchange notes with the House of Silk, before the final offer is sent through to the House of Gold for approval.

Their final role lies in upkeeping the docks and ensuring they are always in top shape.

I am going to cover this very quickly because frankly this is not something Theodore actually talks about. He really does not enjoy talking ill of people, or influencing opinions in a negative fashion, so for the most part he keeps his experiences to himself. Unless there is a reason to know, he will not mention it.

Theodore’s first time occured when he was fifteen; there was not much about it that was remarkable. The other boy was only a year older, and Theodore was easily swept away by his enthusiasm. In the morning he woke alone and did not think much to this – he understood what had been done had been dangerous, and though he had thought maybe it should have meant more, he genuinely does not begrudge the experience nor does he think poorly of the other for dashing out on him.

Not long after this, he met Gerard – a midshipman three years his senior. They became something of a thing, though it only lasted through a total of six get togethers before Theodore broke it off on account of the fact Gerard hit him on three separate occasions; it was then that he developed his low key three strikes policy, allowing forgiveness on two occasions, but walking away after the third.

Between the ages of sixteen and seventeen, Theodore would get involved with two others who would be left aside on account of physical forcefulness and breaching of this three strike policy, and one more who would lay him and leave him. It would be at eighteen that he would meet and engage with thirty year old Lord Byron, in a relationship that would span the course of two years.

What Theodore didn’t know about this situation was that Lord Byron had many boys – and that he was, in fact, boy number seven. This was brought to his attention when three of Byron’s ‘boys’ interjected and cornered Theodore to warn him that Byron’s primary, Samuel, was viciously jealous of him and would likely attempt something violent and cruel if he did not back away a little.

Theodore was oblivious to what was going on until these three spelled it out for him, thinking him a bit slow not to know he was hardly special to Lord Byron. Though he realized this explained a great deal, Theodore ultimately left Lord Byron entirely as soon as this conversation was concluded. He was not comfortable with the dishonesty or the competitiveness of the others – for though he wants adventure in his life, he would prefer it not be at the cost of people’s feelings.

Theodore was free of Lord Byron no more than four months before a contemporary of the man swept him up, and this lasted for four months before two of Theodore’s midshipman desperately tried to explain to him that the way he was being treated was woeful and abusive. Though he dismissed this out of hand, when it was brought to his attention again by the man’s own sister, he had to acknowledge that it was truly so – for though he did often feel hurt by the man, he hadn’t considered words to be abusive before.

Now twenty one, nearing twenty-two, Theodore went roughly six months before he fell into yet another trap – though this one lasted two years and required the aid of Daniel and four midshipmen who were very close to the two lieutenants to escape from. Shaken by the experience and grateful for his rescue, Theodore fell in with one of the midshipmen for about seven months before again, it came to an abrupt end and Daniel found a means to transfer the man to another ship.

As of the age of twenty seven, Theodore has been single for two years – his longest stretch to date – because he has convinced himself to wait for someone who sees value in him. It served him well a few times, when someone made a pass and he almost went for it simply because there was interest, but in the end, he simply reminded himself that if he mattered, they would find other ways to be involved with him.

Unfortunately, Theodore still falls in love very easily. There is no escaping that truth – so though he has convinced himself to ‘do better’ – in truth chances are, he will continue to fall for tragedy until the day he dies.

DISCLAIMER:

This headcanon concerns the pressure Horatio places on himself on account of his mother’s death – and more specifically, the blame he believes falls on his shoulders for being born and taking her life in exchange for his own.

It delves a little more deeply into the persistent belief he holds that all care he receives is conditional upon his performance, his warped sense of responsibility for coffins that do not belong on his conscience, further significance upon his locked-jaw syndrome and most importantly: what motivates him forward.

For the sake of my followers I wish to be abundantly clear that what lays below the cut is a very blunt examination of trauma that – while shedding enlightenment on Horatio’s particular behaviours, particularly his recklessness and the way he thrives beneath positive reinforcement – has every potential to be triggering.

Thematically, this post will gloss over elements / allusions to sexual assault and will openly discuss suicidal ideology and self destructive tendencies. If these elements disturb you, please do not read on.

Understand that these are things no character should have any business knowing without abundant discussion with me first – and frankly, Horatio entrusting them with it. These themes will not be brought into threads without adamant discussion between muns and if I feel that Horatio would become reflective of these themes, that the direction of the thread may throw him into a dangerous position I may need to drop it. I will not place my mental health on the line for these explorations, but it is worthy to note they exist and may result in threads being declined as I cannot see a way to maintain them without delving into an aspect of Horatio I may not feel comfortable getting into with that particular character, or even for myself.

Threads addressing Horatio’s struggles will not be taken on lightly and some may only come about if we are shipping. Most of this information is already known to @seafaired and @tidehearted, but as I will not be concealing any of our interactions it seems wise to lay it all out for everyone. Threads addressing these concerns will be abundantly tagged and kept under read more at my personal preference.

MOTIVATION:

“Duty”:

Although Horatio cites his duty as his primary motivation for action – any close examination of his actions reveals this to be frank bullshit. Were he half as duty bound as he claimed to be, he would not fly so fancy free with the Articles of War ( which he frequently flouts to the point of flagrant war crimes ) nor would he be so quick to snap at those well above himself such as members of peerage and even admiralty.

In truth, duty is what is expected of Horatio and therefore he wraps that word around himself like a cloak and observes the world around him, adapting to what he believes a dutiful person should be. He is motivated by his need to be a worthy man, to be someone deserving of life, and duty is supposedly the answer.

Those who are dutiful and loyal are seen as the pillars of society. Those who are diplomatic and prudent are valued not only by Geoffrey Hornblower, to whom Horatio feels he has the most to prove, but to the world as a whole. Possessing duty, then, is a Fundamental Aspect™ of being a Worthy Man™ and therefore Horatio acts as he believes a dutiful person should.

Key Word: Acts.

When the line between what is duty and what is morally right is drawn in the sand, Horatio invariably follows the path of his heart. He values human life more than he values following the Articles of War. He values human life before he cares about borders or countries or allies vs enemies. Life is life. And this way of thinking is treacherous in his line of work – it marks him rebellious, it marks him impudent, it marks him naive. None of these are marks Horatio wants. They are marks against him that he deplores.

He hates himself for caring, because it keeps him from being dutiful, which keeps him from being a Worthy Man™ He hates his inability to be diplomatic under pressure because it marks him as a disappointment, it marks him as failing, and yet there are times where nothing can keep him from speaking his honest truth; though this shall be covered more in Aggressive Outbursts.

Guilt:

This is a PTSD point, why in the hell is it under motivation, you ask? Because guilt is a powerful motivator, says I.

Horatio has nigh crippling depression that masks itself through routine. By following routine he can push past that gnawing, aching desire to lay down and refuse to get up. He lacked routine before joining the Navy and it did him no favors – he adores his work because it often keeps him too busy to remember why he is there. To remember that he joined the Navy because he believed they could transform him into a man worthy of the life he feels he has stolen.

When at his lowest points, Horatio lives for literally no other reason than to do something that was worth his mother dying for. Unfortunately, this guilt-motivator only compounds itself with time, starting with the death of the butler, and eventually the deaths of Clayton and Archie.

This causes Horatio to feel as though all he has done is rack up more debt against his unworthy life. He is constantly aching for death, every day, but he keeps marching, he gets up every day with the thought ‘I owe them’. I cannot die today – I am not the man they died for. I am not yet a man worth dying for. It’s time to get up. I cannot die and leave their lives in vain.

Unfortunately, as is the nature of such a negative motivation in a warzone and just in fucking general,  ‘I owe it to them’ has times when it stops meaning ‘get up’ and starts meaning ‘stay down’. When this happens, he gets reckless – dangerously so – and his jaw will unlock more frequently. Horatio Hornblower will never take his own life, but there are days when he will do all in his power to make someone do him the favor instead.

Shame:

Horatio hates himself. And because Horatio hates himself, he cannot see why people would care about him, or why they would be loyal to him. He sees all care toward him as conditional because his own self loathing runs so deeply he believes that the moment anyone catches a glimpse of “who he really is” they will drop him like a stone.
While this has been a prevalent issue for him ever since his father first locked his jaw in regard to speaking out about being mistreated ( the men don’t cry / a gentleman never makes a scene thrashing he received as a child ) it grew steadily worse as Geoffrey reinforced, again and again, how everything that made Horatio human, everything that made him Horatio was in some way inherently flawed or wrong.

He was trained against expressing his emotions, his true thoughts – diplomacy being misconstrued as don’t speak – guarding one’s emotions being hounded as don’t feel – kindness being so viciously punished as to be construed as weakness – ever since he was a child. So it is small wonder, then, that he would be a ripe candidate for imposter syndrome.
Horatio elevates the chain of command because Title means Duty Done which means being one step closer to Worthiness. However every step up comes at the price of knowing he doesn’t belong there. Of seeing his weaknesses shine all the brighter, of being crippled, internally, by the terror of being revealed for the emotive tempest of contrary thought and opinion he truly is. Of being bared before anyone as the volatile fool who just plays at being worth his salt.

Worse still is the pressure he places upon himself to perform the impossible, to hold these roles and not just succeed, but excel, because to do anything less would be a black mark on all who have supported him. He would rather die than prove to be a black mark on the career of Edward Pellew; so he pushes himself to the brink, lest anyone ever guess that he doesn’t deserve even a quarter of what that man has done for him.

PTSD:

Aggressive Outbursts:

Horatio bottles his emotions and clamps his jaw down on what he really feels so often and for so long that eventually, he cracks. What is more is certain behaviours and remarks can cause him to lose control all the quicker because they hit too close to home or strike upon vulnerabilities that exist within him that he simply cannot bear.

Some outbursts can be wildly emotional and dangerously revealing – which is why he relies on the men of the Justinian ( Kennedy, Matthews, Styles ) the most – they have, by his estimation, seen him at his ‘weakest’ and granted him clemency on it. For this reason, he may reveal more of himself to them, simply to ease the pressure on his soul; they have the power to destroy him from the Justinian, so what is more?

In threads, Horatio may reveal his temper to test others. To see what boundaries he can push before he is snapped at – and this is a destructive, self sabotaging habit. He uses this especially against men he feels are better than him – because their response to being tested, shows him how he should respond ( and while he may feel he can never respond as they do, the knowledge helps him form greater understanding. ) Other times, he may simply break – though in these instances, it will be discussed, as this will invariably lead to the bleeding of damages like the draining of poison.

Fight vs Flight:

Horatio’s response to violence against him depends on three factors.

  • Duty: Action in the line of duty does not register to Horatio as a threat against his person. He responds to it as an attack on the people around him and he will not tolerate it. His focus is on doing everything in his power to win the fight and preserve as many of his people as possible. It is routine, to him. He has an intimate relationship with blood and injury as a doctor’s son; to him, battle is a time of focused, pinpoint exhilaration and energy.

  • Undeserved Assault: This is when Horatio cares about Horatio – which happens few and far between. This is when he is attacked and by no account, does he feel he has done anything to deserve this. His response is immediate, volatile retaliation and to do everything in his power to destroy his assailant. If this is not possible in the attack itself then he will connive a way to ruin them later.

    Prime Example: Jack Simpson.
In my interpretation, Jack forced a kiss on Horatio – which may have turned into a far worse assault, had Horatio not interpreted this as unwarranted and promptly bit, and ripped at the man until blood exploded between them and Jack retaliated with a furious flurry of fists, the likes of which we see in That One Scene. Horatio’s only thought was he bleeds, therefore, he can die. Cue his attempt to duel the man, and his frustration when his own moral code would not let him kill the man when the chance did present itself.

  • Warranted Assault: This is when Horatio believes he has done something to deserve being struck out against – and this is his default response more often than not as he is inherently self destructive and quick to undervalue his own worth. He is also very quick to find fault in himself, so it is easy for him to apply blame when perhaps there truly is none.

When Horatio believes the punishment deserved he will not defend himself from the assault unless to not do so would place someone else at risk. He will take a punch, he will accept lashing without argument, without bitterness. If he feels he is in the wrong – even if he has a perfect defense – he will not take it, because he feels to do so is to make a scene of honest reprimand, and that he has been very well trained to never, ever do.

    Prime Example: Mutiny / Retribution.
Horatio’s inability to keep silent in the face of injustice, in the face of unwarranted assault on an innocent, warrants him punishment from Sawyer; he accepts the punishment because he is duty bound to do so, but he is bitter, because while he recognizes it as deserved through the Articles, he feels he did the right thing. This is remarkable only because although he viewed Sawyer as a threat, he did not see him as the type of threat warranting the kind of violence Jack SImpson encouraged.

That said, Horatio’s habitual silence in the face of punishment could have cost his life; which we all know he doesn’t really value. However, it could have also cost the lives of Buckland, Bush, and Kennedy; thus, he fought, and defended his decisions in order to defend theirs. Had he been the only one involved, he would have hung himself on his own locked jaw.

Self Destructive Tendencies:

By this point it is perhaps abundantly obvious that Horatio self-sabotages himself – what we need to address though, is his recklessness because it is distinctly tied to both his sense of self worth and his determination to be Worthy. Horatio lacks a self preservation button – he will always value someone else before himself – but because he values the dead, who he feels deserve for him to be worth dying for, he doesn’t throw his life away needlessly.

Dying to save lives is a good thing! Dying so that others may live – was that not exactly the burden placed upon him by a good woman ( his mother ), by a man who did nothing wrong ( the butler ), by a good man ( Clayton ) by a good friend ( Kennedy ) And since Horatio believes his life to be meaningless but for the dead he owes, his death, therefore, places no burden upon anyone else. He dies, doing a good thing, and no one mourns. Life continues, the dead are appeased, and Horatio is at peace. This is his logic every time he does something phenomenally fucking insane, like board a flaming ship full of powder, heading for ships filled with yet more powder!

Challenging those he sees as better than himself – testing and learning in turns – is his way of punishing himself. His way of reminding himself he is not Worthy, and should the day come that these games, these learning exercises, lead him to his own death, he will grimly acknowledge the bitter truth he has fought so hard to improve since the day he understood his mother died, and he had lived unwanted and unwelcome in her stead:

He was, indeed, never worth dying for; and now, he never will be.

Triggers:

This is covered more in Final Notes, but it should be noted that outside of those specific circumstances, there are things that can set Horatio off the deep end pretty quickly.

  • Men taking liberties with women who are not interested ( Such as Moncoutant with Mariette ) will absolutely cause him to strike out, and no he does not give a flying monkey’s asshole if you’re a midshipman, a major, the goddamn King of England himself – he will say something, and damn the consequence of it.

  • Hi, he hates the peerage and the idea of purchased commission. Friendly reminder that Horatio’s sense of duty is a goddamn act – he doesn’t give a shit if you were born in a horse’s stall or shitting silver spoons – he will treat you the way you treat your inferiors if you piss him off and damn the consequences of it.

Having money doesn’t make you a leader.
Having noble blood doesn’t make you a noble person.
To quote some good emo shit, when the rich wage war it is the poor who die, and as much as he hates himself for seeing it, Horatio fucking well sees it and he bites his tongue against it as much as he can. He plays hard to the role of dutiful soldier, and in time he learns diplomacy, but harkening back to imposter syndrome, Horatio’s true thoughts could have him hung.

Certain behaviours of those who are of the peerage, of those who have paid their way to the top without doing a fucking thing to earn the power they hold over literal thousands of lives, of those who think more of glory and command than of life and human decency, can spark him off in a badly dangerous manner.

    (
See; yelling at Foster; see, giving Moncoutant a goddamn dressing down at his own fucking table; see contradicting Pellew the day he met the man. Articles of War be damned, Horatio’s respect is earned, never blindly given. However, once his respect is earned, once his loyalty is won – Horatio may not have duty in truth, but he has a willingness to prove himself that could bring a regime to its knees if someone with his loyalty asked it of him. For all he feels himself worth so little, he can find the world in good men, and give everything for them. )

Warped Sense Of Reality:

I think at this point it’s ?? Abundantly obvious but if you need more information on this feel free to hmu.

FINAL NOTE:

Horatio’s only real triggers are inherently couched in acts that do not take place outside of romantic engagements. As I will never write an active assault thread, the only chance of him experiencing an anxiety attack as a result of a kiss or anything more racy in nature is if it is planned with a shipping partner in order to open conversation about what occurred on the Justinian, and perhaps even what happened to him in prison, for the purpose of airing it and helping Horatio to overcome this piece of his past fully.

Such threads will be tagged liberally for obvious reasons. As both a survivor and once-upon-a-time counsellor, I don’t believe in hiding the recovery story, but I also refuse to glorify the abuse or shine a light on it that will damage someone else. I will be more than happy to ship with people who have no desire to see any sign of this aspect of Horatio; I have no problem claiming he had something positive prior to our ship that addressed and helped him recover – thus providing him the development he needs while sparing the need to actively deal with anything in a thread.

Alternatively, I am happy to have my shipping partner’s character be the one to assist Horatio in his recovery, without actually writing in a thread itself. I recognize the topic of recovery can be deeply mired and I am perfectly content to do what feels safe and comfortable for my partners. This is here, only to forewarn that with some partners these types of things may be covered more directly.

Ever More Than Rivalry

~

Armando stilled suddenly when the Sparrow touched him- it was an unspoken rule, amongst the crew that had enough wit to even consider it, not to touch, for they were all as horrified by one another as they were of themselves. Certainly, the little bird only touched the ring, but it was still a gesture now foreign to the ghost captain, to be reached for.

{{ “This is why I could never call you pirate, Jack Sparrow. You are a man of more honour than I would ever have believed.” }} Were he of his full mind, he might have reflected on how he would have hunted this man, had he not returned, how he had already spent years hating him, and would have spent yet more, until he and his crew were freed. He might even have reflected on how funny it was that the little sparrow brought so much life to his lifeless crew, when he came about, and seemed to leave a little with them, when he left. But he was not of his full mind, and so he only smiled oddly, dribbling a little more blood as he straightened up somewhat.

Upon taking his leave, Jack made his way to Tortuga with some struggle, where he reunited with Captain Barbossa and – through a bit of gambling – managed to secure the man and some remainders of his crew as men aboard the Pearl, with the more seasoned captain serving as his First Mate.

Though adventures ensued, Jack was frequently focused on his own missions – first and foremost being the crew of the Silent Mary, of which he told Barbossa nothing. Tensions between them began to rise as it became clear Jack was not particularly cut out for command and did not see fit to plunder nearly as much as an honest pirate ought.

Before they grow to a high point, the Pearl is intercepted by Venganza, and Pirate Lord of the Caribbean Seas Esmeralda Maria Consuela Anna de Sevilla requested an audience. Aware of his connection to the Silent Mary via his bit of mirror, Jack tucked it beneath his shirt to keep the crew from seeing what Esmeralda looked like – for among pirates, she was to him both a friend and a lover, and it felt ill on his heart to betray her in any fashion.

Although, she was perhaps a bit too pleased with the way his fate had turned. He could “no longer run from who he truly was” and this sentiment lead to a most considerable argument – it started mild but eventually turned quite sharp and fast as Esmeralda’s pique had her dissolve into Spanish and Jack’s frustration lead to him attempting to keep up and only making matters worse.

Unfortunately, it was a fight not destined to ever see resolution, as the EITC managed to catch up to Venganza and took on both the frigate and the Pearl, the latter of whom fought under Barbossa’s command whilst Jack remained stuck aboard Venganza during the onslaught. Eventually, Barbossa and the crew aboard the Pearl managed to devastate two of the EITC’s flanking ships, while the Venganza claimed total victory over the other three, one of which cast an orange glow over the other two as they sank slowly in the midst of her explosion.

Esmeralda was fatally wounded in the battle, and her first mate was in a bad way. Though he ultimately would survive, at the time she had to make a choice – and it was Jack to whom she passed her piece of eight, pledging him to the Caribbean and demanding he honor her wish. Unwilling to take the responsibility, he tried to pass the piece of eight to high ranking officers in her crew – two declined on account of it being her last demand, while the third declined on account of personal cowardice.

Trapped, Jack affixed the piece of eight to his bandana and made his way back to the Pearl, where he retreated into his cabin to set the heading and confer with Salazar through the mirror. Though the ghost could not speak back to him, he knew that he would hear what was said.

“I told you once pirates were always getting into my affairs. Well there is a reason for that. I was born on a ship, belonging to the Keeper of the Code, one Captain Teague. I’ve spent my whole life running from Teague and pirates. My whole life toward honest living, but Teague? Well he’s like you – he’s relentless, and nothing stops him. He’d find me, somehow, drag me back. So I know where the Code is, and I know what this little trinket on my head means. You’re about to be shown the way to Shipwreck Cove – I bet you’ve heard of it – I suggest you mind the route.” Jack grumbled, “Only those who’ve been there can find it – but perhaps those lead to it can too."

That done, he strode out and informed Gibbs of their destination, having him set the course before Barbossa strode over to demand why they were headed for Shipwreck Cove. Jack considered lying, but knew it to be fruitless.

“I need to be sworn in mate. I’m to take Esmeralda’s place as Lord of the Caribbean.”

Though he considered his answer both succinct and helpful, it seemed in some manner to offend Barbossa, whose expression warped into one rather befitting apoplexy. “You? A pirate lord?!” The disbelief was palpable enough that Jack felt it appropriate to frown a little, “You’re nothing but a boy. You’re barely even a pirate!”

On that, Jack certainly had to agree. “Thank you,” He began, but that was certainly not the right thing to start with.

"That wasn’t a compliment!” Barbossa’s fierce interruption shifted, and Jack could see the calculation forming before he launched his next attack. “You think your father will be proud?”

Startled by the angle, Jack responded quickly to hide his sense of alarm. “My who?”

"Don’t play coy with me. The resemblance between you two is uncanny.” Barbossa’s gritted response was offensive enough that Jack was able to respond easily with, "I honestly have no idea what you’re on about mate.”

"The Keeper of the Code, damn you! He’s your father, is he not?”

"No idea,” Tone affable and once again, battling with frightful honesty Jack continued, “Why don’t you ask him for me? I’ve always thought I sprung up without one.”

“All men have fathers, Jack.”

Captain,” Jack stressed, for what felt like the thousandth time, “And not true. Very not true. Especially not true for me, and I’ll thank you to keep your notions about Captain Teague to yourself in the future, as I recall the last time someone made such a claim, Teague shot im.”

“Aint that proof?”

"Of what, other than his temper and love of drink?” Now it was Jack’s turn to be incredulous.

"Mm. So you’re tellin me Teague’s got no hold or say on ya?”

“Oh I didn’t say that.” Hedging, now.

“So you admit it!” Barbossa’s triumphant tone rattled Jack wrong enough he saw fit to immediately correct it, “You’re making no sense here, you realize? I was his cabin boy. He’s a pirate, to him, everything is either his, or not his. If it is not his, and he wants it, he will make it his. And if it is his, and he doesn’t want it, nobody else gets to have it, savvy?”

Barbossa was frowning, so Jack continued – uncertain how much of this needed to be spelled out ( and unaware that Barbossa was already taking all this into his calculations as Jack provided him with free ammunition.

"I belong to him as servant only, by his view, and so, any who would claim me to have higher value might be thinking of stealing me, so thus, they are shot. It’s not that hard to follow mate. As to me being his son – I don’t see it. We’re nothing alike.”

"Have ye looked in a mirror lately?” Barbossa was no longer arguing – he was merely collecting information now, as it seemed Jack was easy to rile on this angle; little did he know of the Silent Mary or Jack’s connection to it, but the question startled the younger man enough to have him return with an unexpectedly sharp, “What do you know of it?” Before Barbossa had time to respond to the change in atmosphere, Jack wrested control of the situation back into his own hands by ordering the man to get the crew trimming the sails – and the trip to Shipwreck was underway.

Upon his arrival, Jack makes his way through the winding labyrinth with Barbossa tight upon his heels. He doesn’t think too much of it, and when he reaches the conference room Jack notes immediately that several of the Lords were already present – this was good, as it meant that news of Esmeralda’s fall had already spread. It also meant he would not need to linger long, for only two Lords and the Keeper were necessary for swearing in a new one.

Throwing his sword in the globe, he announced himself both formally and succinctly, for those present already knew who he was – by some measure, at least. "Esmeralda has fallen. She has named me in her place.”

This resulted in staring from the collective, before some rose to their feet and began yelling ( Chevalle and Villeneuva mainly others laughed while Mistress Ching stood and beckoned to him. He dodged fighting men, and accepted her embrace. Her words, however, earned a quiet rejoinder.

“I’m still not a pirate, Mistress.”

Her response was much as it always was – pointed, and quiet. She saved her howl for battle, and it was one of the things he appreciated deeply about her. “Sail strong, Jack Sparrow. Mistress Ching will always welcome you in Singapore.” The conclusion of their reunion came in the wake of her blessing and Jack bowed accordingly.

“Thank you, my lady.”

Upon straightening, Jack was then subjected to a great deal of politics before being sworn in. Once accomplished, Jack took his leave and knew he would need a means of returning to the Silent Mary soon, without Barbossa becoming wise to what was happening. In a stroke of genius, he spoke to Mistress Ching and had the Pearl docked for repairs, knowing it would make stealing her an impossible task for at least eight weeks. Getting hold of a small boat he could operate on his own, Jack sailed from Shipwreck to the Triangle, aware that this time, he had revealed many secrets and could, potentially, be sailing for his death once more.

Upon his arrival, Armando asked him to explain what all he had witnessed meant. At the question, he rubbed the back of his neck.

{{  “It means – I’ve duty now, to protect the Caribbean from rogues that call themselves pirates, whilst by law being a pirate myself. There’s two kinds of pirates – there’s the brethren, which is this sort,"  }} He tapped the trinket, {{  "And rogues – rapists and killers, blackest of black hearted, treacherous, filthy dogs,"  }} And his voice, even in Spanish, manages to convey a wealth of hatred, for he has been burned by the rogues. Burned badly indeed. {{  "Brethren, we steal to live because we must. Press-ganged runaways, folks who refuse to trade in people, folks who refused to follow an order that weren’t right by their morals – that’s brethren. By brethren law, we keep ourselves at least a little honest. And we wont stand for raping, or killing for no good reason."  }}

He shook his head, then shrugged his arms, looking almost like he was giving a tired flap. {{  "It means I am – in taking Esmeralda’s place – a pirate, and a good man. I suppose if I have to live with this brand I may as well do it to the code."  }}
