“Oops!” | Billy to Charles

{ Random Oopsies }

7. Your character walking in on mine making a shady transaction.

The coin had already passed hands when Charles noted the familiar form of Billy Bones lurking in the shadows not far off – looking less like a man with intent on keeping himself hidden, and more like one who had come to the fast conclusion he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was debating what the fuck to do about it.

Accepting the roll of leather that contained his purchase, Charles returned his gaze to the seller and held it until the man backed down, turning and heading down the opposite direction of where Bones was standing. Tucking the roll into his shirt, there was a moment in which he considered doing the same – but in the end, he shifted on his heels and marched the way he needed to go, even if it did mean right past the other man.

On his way by, he met Billy’s gaze as if daring him to say anything – admittedly curious to see if he might dare.

“Oh, no lieutenant Bush! Not at all, that would be quite the extravagant tale of brilliance, and most certainly not suited to me,” Graham laughed, his amusement at the idea warm and completely lacking any sense of indignation toward what some might consider a calling out of sorts. “My third lieutenant, Ben Ali – he was the one to piece together what they were about on the aft – I was just the one that executed the final order.”

He was also the one assigned the sum total of the credit by the admiralty, which was why he deliberately told this tale so boisterously as to encourage call outs such as these. Something needed to be done to draw further attention to that young man’s efforts, whether the admiralty liked it or not

“ The more ignorant they are, the more opinions they have. ” | Edward maybe don’t grumble about the Admiralty under your breath in front of Hume, he’s too sharp not to pick up on that.

“My goodness, Captain,” The carefully affected tone gave no true indication of Graham’s own opinion – which, considering the other man’s particular note of complaint might well have been an action born of deliberate wisdom. It came as little surprise to him that a man who had held command as long as Pellew would have his share of malcontent – but as the man was always so carefully circumspect it was unusual to hear him denounce the admiralty quite so thoroughly as this.

Rather than challenge the man however, Graham simply offered a smile that seemed to indicate he knew full well he likely had not been meant to hear that thought expressed. “I think we could both use some fresh air while we await their deliberations, don’t you?” He suggested, offering the man a literal escape from the frustrations of dealing with the admiralty at least for a time. It would be two hours before they were set to be present – nothing said they had to wait here in the interim.

A genuine chill crept down Graham’s spine when Captain Pellew abruptly dismissed his excuse – there was no urgent business to attend at this time, not under the admiralty. Propriety would not think of it outside of the most terrible of circumstances, and a man senior in his command would surely be more involved than a newly minted captain.

Straightening his spine and praying he could clear away any suspicion toward the lieutenant whose bed he had just left, he attempted again with a simple and curt, “It was of a personal nature, sir. Forgive me – I had not meant to insinuate otherwise.”

This is a permanent starter call for an AU Eleanor Guthrie, of Starz’ Black Sails explicitly. Her design falls in line with the main verse of Charles Vane, and her perspectives on it can be found here. Whether or not additional verses will be crafted for her will depend on her development over time.

These calls give me a heads up on who is open to interacting with whom ( which is handy for those who have exclusives among my crew! ) and gives me an excuse to kick you starters whenever something crosses the mind, or blow up your inbox knowing who would be most wanted.
